The Opportunity

Video is a key storytelling vehicle for the National Geographic brand and is featured across a wide range of placements on both Nat Geo and Nat Geo Kids. As such, we continuously evaluate the video workflow and quality while working to consolidate the back-end tech stack with other shared brands.

Key projects include:

  • Migrating the video player and back-end content management system (CMS) to a shared version across brands

  • Enhancing video quality to uphold brand standards

My Role

As the product lead for video, I manage relationship building, scoping, and requirements gathering across our back-end platform and video teams, which requires technical knowledge of player systems and upload workflows. I created process flowcharts to illustrate the upload path and dependencies, helping stakeholders better understand timelines and levels of effort.

I also led an initiative to reduce instances of low-resolution video, and secured engineering buy-in to support the effort.

The Outcome

  • Reduced video upshift time by 50%, delivering higher-quality video in half the time.

  • Automated the audio upload process, cutting down a previously manual, week-long task to just minutes.

  • Migrated the video player, resulting in significant annual cost savings.
